Baseball Falls Twice in Extras in CACC Finale

Pomona, NY - The men's baseball team came out on the short side of two extra inning losses yesterday afternoon against Wilmington University.  Game 1 was decided in 10 innings and game 2 finished after 11 innings.

Nyack would take an early 1-0 lead in game 1, when John Kennedy led off the game with an infield single, stole second before coming home on a bunt off the bat of Phil Erwin.

The Warriors would hold a 1-0 lead until the top of the 7th, when Wilmington would knot the game at 1-1.  Nyack would regain the lead in the bottom of the 8th, when Jack Hudak led off the inning with a solo blast to left field to make the score 2-1.  Christian Benitez would score after stealing third base with two outs and advancing home when the throw glanced into left field.  Ruben Correa would drive in Erwin to make the score 4-1 Nyack and Carlos Pino Jr. would drive in two with a two out opposite field single to make the score 6-1.  

The first 5 WU batters would reach base in the top of the ninth before the Wildcats would knot the game at 6-6.  Nyack would see the tying run reach third base in the bottom of the inning but Wilmington would extinguish the threat and go on to plate two in the 10th before holding on for the 8-6 win.

Erik Bussey would throw 8 innings, allow 2 earned and strike out 1 in game 1.  Kennedy, Correa, and Yoni Rodriguez would each tally multi-hit efforts in game 1.  


The Warriors would jump out to an early 2-0 lead in game two with an rbi single off the bat of Correa in the first and an rbi triple from Kennedy in the 2nd.  Wilmington would knot the game at 2-2 in the top of the 4th, and would take a 3-2 lead in the top of the 5th.

The Warriors would tie the game in the bottom of the 9th, when Ruben Correa would lead off the inning with a single and moved to third on a double down the left field line from Hudak.  Pino would drive in Correa with a sac fly to tie the game, but Wilmington would strand the winning run at third before adding 4 runs in the top of the 11th for the win.

Jose Corrales would pitch 9 strong innings, allowing 1 earned run and striking out 4 in the loss.  Ruben Correa and Carlos Pino Jr. would each collect two hits in the loss.

"I'm proud of our effort this conference season, our guys fought hard after a tough loss in game 1 and showed alot of toughness," states Coach Matt Cornacchione.  "We received great efforts from our seniors this entire season, and hopefully they will get an opportunity to get back into the CACC postseason."

Nyack returns to non conference action this Monday when they host Mercy College at 7 PM at Nyack HS.
