Nyack, NY - The Nyack College men's basketball team used a strong second half to earn their first victory in the new year. The Warriors defeated the Chestnut Hill College Griffins 65-59 in a CACC match played at Bowman Gym on Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors dsitributed the scoring evenly and were led by Jaron Smith and Imran Ritchie with 15 points each. The duo was followed by teammates Ga'Briel Chandler (13 points) and Robert Tyler (11 points). Sophomore Shawn Witherspoon led the Warriors on the glass, pulling down 9 rebounds.
Chestnut Hill enjoyed the better start into the game with a 10-4 run, jumping to an early 6-point lead at the 17:24 mark. A Robert Tyler 3-point bucket would start a Nyack 8-2 run to tie the game 12-12 with 15:35 to go. The Griffins pulled ahead again with their next attack and would extend their lead to 9-points until halftime, 34-25.
Nyack would close the gap with a 9-1 run to start the second half. A Imran Ritchie jumpshot at the 14:52 minute mark would tie the game 38-38. Minutes later the Warrior would take the lead for the first time when Jaron Smith would convert a shot from behind the arc to give Nyack the 3-point lead. Both teams battled back and forth and the game saw several lead changes and tied scores in the following minutes. Robert Tyler would convert two free throws with 5:38 to go. His first shot tied the score and his second would give his team the one point advantage, 50-51. Over the next two minutes the Warriors used a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 8-points with 3:33 left in the game. Nyack was able to defend their lead throughout the remaining minutes of the game, which finished with a score of 65-59 in favor of the Warriors.
The Warriors will travel to New Jersey on Tuesday to face the Georgian Court University Lions in a CACC match. Tip-off is slated for 8pm.
