Jocelin Wright Records Double-Double in Loss to Felician
The Nyack College Warriors women's basketball team traveled to Felician University on Tuesday night, starting off strong but ending with a 43-57 loss to bring their CACC record to 1-1.
In the first half, the Warriors and the Golden Falcons fought back-and-forth on the scoreboard. Nyack scored the first points of the game on four straight free throws, and Felician answered with two quick baskets. Kelli Smoot and Bryanna Brown both hit 3-pointers in the last few minutes of the first quarter to bring the Warriors within one point of the Falcons at 12-13, followed by another 3-point score from Jocelin Wright two minutes into the second quarter to stop a Falcons surge.
Nyack kept up their aggressive play under the basket in the first half, out-rebounding the Falcons on defense to give their offense more scoring opportunities. Despite the Warriors' defensive efforts, the Falcons pulled away to take an 8-point lead with five minutes to go in the half. Nyack quickly responded on offense to score 8 straight points of their own while holding Felician scoreless, heading into halftime with the score tied at 25.
Starting the second half, the Warriors kept it close. Each Falcons score was answered by a Warriors shot, with most of Nyack's points coming on second-chance baskets. Late in the third quarter, the Golden Falcons offense again started to pull away, taking advantage of some Warriors turnovers. With the score at 32-33, Felician scored 7 straight points, including 4 on free throws, to put Nyack down 32-40 at the start of the fourth quarter.
A layup by Kelli Smoot started the Warriors off in the fourth, but Felician answered with two quick baskets of their own. From there, both teams battled to score for almost two minutes, trading turnovers and defensive rebounds to keep the ball away from the offense. The Golden Falcons continued to push their advantage, breaking the stalemate with a layup and two free throws. Audrey Matteson blocked a shot in the final 2 minutes, which led to a layup and a 3-pointer by Bryanna Brown, but the surge was not enough to overcome the deficit, and the Warriors finished the game in a loss.
Jocelin Wright led the Warriors on offense and defense, scoring 11 points and claiming 10 defensive rebounds. Khadijah Hickson added two steals and Imani Dawson contributed three assists.
Up next, the Warriors travel to face conference opponent Dominican College on Saturday 12/9.
