The Nyack College women's basketball team traveled to Dominican College on Saturday night, playing a strong defensive game but unable to grab the win in a 48-57 loss to the Chargers. The Warriors' CACC record now stands at 1-2.
In the first half, quick scores by both teams led to a 2-5 score in favor of Dominican. For the next two minutes, each team was held scoreless, as Nyack relied on defensive rebounds to keep the ball away from Dominican. Yamalis Villegas sank two free throws to kick-start the scoring again, and the Warriors jumped out to a 12-7 lead.
Khay'la Latimer of Dominican make two consecutive 3-pointers to give the Chargers back the lead at the start of the second quarter. The Warriors kept the ball in the paint, scoring layups and free throws off of aggressive offense to keep the score close. With two minutes left in the half, the Chargers scored four straight layups. Bryanna Brown knocked down two free throws to close out the half and bring Nyack within 6 points, down 23-29.
At the start of the second half, the Warriors fell behind 9 points after another quick 3 from Latimer, but Nyack's offense was able to rally together and fight their way back. Bryanna Brown and Yamalis Villegas combined to score 10 points in the next 8 minutes, while the Warriors defense held the Chargers to 2 free throws in the same amount of time. Alison Rozzi's layup at the start of the fourth quarter brought the Warriors within 1, down 35-36.
The score continued to bounce back and forth throughout the final quarter, with Nyack fighting for every defensive rebound to give their offense more opportunities to score. With less than three minutes left in the game, the score was tied at 46, but a Nyack turnover and two fouls gave the Chargers back the advantage. Audrey Matteson sank two free throws to put the Warriors back within 2, but the Chargers controlled the ball and made all of their free throws to end the game, cutting short the Warriors' surge in a Nyack loss.
