The Nyack College women's basketball team faced off against conference opponent Post University on Tuesday night, closing out a hard-fought game to claim a 73-70 victory. The win brings the Warriors' CACC record to 2-2.
At the start of the first half, both teams got off to a slow offensive start. Nyack's defense stole the show, forcing turnovers to keep the ball away from the Eagles as the teams matched each other point-for-point. Up 10-9, the Warriors went on a 10-6 run to close out the first quarter.
Japria Karin-Duvall opened the second quarter with an immediate 3-pointer, which was quickly answered by Gabriela Middleton of Post. The tempo of the game remained the same throughout the rest of the half, as Post caught back up to Nyack to keep the score bouncing back and forth. With 6 minutes before halftime, Imani Dawson scored two consecutive baskets and then grabbed a steal to solidify a Nyack lead, but Post stormed back just before the end of the half, leaving the Warriors down 36-38.
In the second half, Post slowly pulled away throughout the third quarter into the fourth. Kelli Smoot and Bryanna Brown made consecutive 3-pointers to slow the Eagles' surge, but the Warriors found themselves down by 14 with 8 minutes left in the game.
A Kelli Smoot layup sparked an 11-0 run for the Warriors, and they took a 66-65 lead with under 5 minutes to play. From there, it was a game of free throws, with Bryanna Brown's 3-pointer at 1:48 the only field goal in the last 4 minutes. The Warriors stayed solid at the foul line through the very end to earn the win.
Up next, the Warriors host Caldwell University in another conference matchup on Friday 12/30.
