The Nyack College women's basketball team hosted the University of Sciences on Saturday, as the Warriors fought hard but ultimately ended the game in a loss to the top-ranked team in the CACC.
In the first quarter, the Warriors kept it close as the score bounced back and forth between the teams. Yamelis Villegas tied it up for Nyack on a layup halfway through the quarter, but the Devils scored 7 unanswered points before Alison Rozzi drove in for a layup to end the first quarter. Japria Karim-Duvall scored on two jump shots to start the second quarter, and the Warriors defense created some turnovers before halftime to slow the Devils' offense. USciences kept driving down the court, however, and Nyack went into halftime down by 10.
The Devils started the third quarter with a scoring run that was cut short by a 3-pointer by Jocelin Wright, but USciences answered the distance shot with one of their own a few moments later. A Karim-Duvall rebound led to a score from Villegas, which was followed with another 3-point shot from Wright. Bryanna Brown made two consecutive layups followed by a Rozzi 3-point shot to end the quarter, but the Devils still held onto the lead going into the final 10 minutes of play.
The Warriors continued to play aggressively on both offense and defense, but were not able to slow the Devils' scores. Japria Karim-Duvall scored first for the Warriors in the final quarter on a 3-point shot, and Janae Bailey drove in for a layup and drew a foul, sinking the following free-throw shot with just under 4 minutes left. Nyack fought to the end, as Emily Santiago finished the game by making a last-second buzzer beater as the Warriors ended in a loss.
Japria Karim-Duvall led the Warriors with 13 points. Bryanna Brown contributed 4 assists, and both Jocelin Wright and Janae Bailey had 5 rebounds.
Up next, the Warriors will host Dominican in their final game of the season on Saturday 2/24 at 1 PM.
